Dowry – And you thought it only happened in India

indian news melbourne

In an exclusive interview with G’day India, Tanul Thakur, the founder of, a website that became a rage with Indian netizens, shares his reasons behind starting the site, and more.

Why did you set up

I used to be repelled by the system of dowry, and I had always wanted to comment on it. But I did not want to preach anyone. So, I thought the best way to ridicule this social evil is to satirize the whole scenario. Thus the idea of Dowry Calculator was born.

The website, quoting reports, has been the one of the top trending topics in Twitter India and attracted more than half a million hits in a month’s time. Was it expected?

I was overwhelmed with the overall positive response because I did not expect the website to catch on with everyone in such a huge manner. But, it was really heartening to know that there are so many people who think dowry is despicable and appreciated that someone satirized this social evil.

What are your views on dowry?

I think the dowry system is incredibly sexist and treats human beings as statistics. Nothing can be sadder than the fact that even educated people practice dowry.

Do you see yourself taking an active social role in the future?

Yes, by all means. I think Dowry Calculator re-ignited so many conversations about dowry, and was instrumental in exposing the ridiculousness of this social evil. I would surely like to map this experience to other societal problems as well.
