Mouth Ulcers

Question: Mr.B: Dear Raj, I have been reading your articles regularly and thought if Homeopathy can help my 10 yrs old son with mouth ulcers. He has been getting them frequently since last few months. Typically they are on the inner side of his lower lip and each time it may last for approximately 10 days. He has used couple of courses of mild antibiotics. Please guide us.
Dear Mr. B, Mouth ulcers, also called as apthous ulcers or canker sores are shallow painful sores inside the mouth. They tend to occur on the inner side of lips, the insides of cheeks, under the tongue and sometimes at the base of gums. They are painful white or yellowish lesions surrounded by a bright red area. They start with burning sensation followed by a red spot which then progresses into an ulcer. There is discomfort and pain for a week and healing takes place normally within 2-3 days. For some individuals, the irritation and pain can be so troublesome that it tends to disrupt their daily life. Pain caused by these ulcers, can at times can be so severe that it can limit their ability to properly speak and eat.
Mild to moderate fever may also accompany them. They must not be confused with fever blisters which occur at the corner of the mouth and the lower lip. Apthous ulcers are of benign type and do not pose any danger, neither are they contagious in nature. These ulcers are more common in women than men and more often occur between the ages of 10 and 40. If an ulcer persists for more than two weeks please make sure you consult your physician.
Contributing factors for outbreaks of apthous ulcers are many and can be in combination. These factors are emotional stress, deficiency of Iron, B-12, and folic acid, menstrual periods, poor oral hygiene, allergy to food substances and dental injuries(teeth biting on tongue or cheeks). They may also occur without any definite cause. It also seems that some have it running in their families. Research also suggests that some people may get ulcers due to the usage of products containing SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate). This chemical is found in some toothpastes and mouthwashes.
Avoid foods that can irritate mucus lining of your mouth. They generally include acidic foods, nuts and spices.
Indicated Homeopathic remedies can be selected depending on the cause. Remedies such as Borax, Acid Sulph, Kali Chloride and other constitutional remedies can help to treat and prevent the recurrence of mouth ulcers. Where the condition could be due to deficiencies appropriate diet and supplements should be used.
