The landmark Indo-Australian feature, directed by Kabir Khan, will bring the dramatic 2023 Silkyara Tunnel rescue and Victorian expert Professor Arnold Dix’s contribution to the big screen.
Melbourne-based Mind Blowing Films is joining forces with Aamir Khan Productions and Kabir Khan Films to produce Silkyara 41, a feature inspired by the extraordinary rescue of 41 workers trapped inside Uttarakhand’s Silkyara Tunnel.
The international production represents a significant milestone for Mind Blowing Films and further strengthens its role in building creative and cultural connections between the Australian and Indian film industries.
The film will be directed by acclaimed Indian filmmaker Kabir Khan, known for Bajrangi Bhaijaan and ’83, and written by Australian screenwriter Andrew Anastasios, whose credits include The Water Diviner. It also marks the first collaboration between Aamir Khan Productions and Kabir Khan.
The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne shared the announcement alongside images featuring Aamir Khan and Kabir Khan. Developed with creative and production talent from India and Australia, the film is being positioned as a landmark cinematic collaboration between the two countries.
The Silkyara Tunnel disaster captured global attention in November 2023 after a collapse trapped 41 construction workers underground for 17 days. A complex rescue operation followed, involving engineers, drilling specialists, government agencies and workers from numerous disciplines.
Among those who contributed was Professor Arnold Dix, an internationally recognised tunnelling expert from Victoria. His role in the operation earned him widespread admiration in both India and Australia.
Mitu Bhowmick Lange AM, founder and chief executive of Mind Blowing Films, said she immediately recognised the story’s potential for the big screen.
“From the moment I learned about the Silkyara rescue, I knew this story belonged on the big screen,” she said. “It is a story of hope, perseverance and collective determination. To partner with Aamir Khan Productions on this project is truly special.”
Aamir Khan described the rescue as a story of “courage, resilience, ingenuity and humanity in the face of impossible odds”, adding that its message was especially meaningful as India and Australia continued to strengthen their bilateral relationship.
Director Kabir Khan said he was drawn to the human dimensions of the rescue—the trapped workers, their anxious families and the remarkable individuals who united to overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges.
Professor Dix stressed that the rescue was never about one individual, but about people from different cultures, backgrounds and disciplines working towards the shared goal of bringing every worker home safely.
The production has also received support from then Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan and Federal Minister for the Arts Tony Burke, who welcomed its potential to deepen creative ties between Australia and India.
More than a survival drama, Silkyara 41 will celebrate human ingenuity, international cooperation and resilience. Details about its cast, filming schedule and release date will be announced in due course.
