Wimbledon: World No 1 and Australian Ashleigh Barty party is out of the Wimbledon games after losing to American Alison Riske in the fourth round.
Riske knocked out Barty 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 in an arm-wrestle of a match that saw the Australian unusually nervy, and her opponent ruthless in taking advantage, a media report said.
Riske will face seven-time champion Serena Williams after she beat Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro.
“When the big moments were there, Alison played better today,” Barty said after the match.
Barty said she was disappointed. “Obviously it’s a tough pill to swallow. In the same breath, it’s been an incredible few months.”
Barty’s place at the top of the WTA rankings is safe for now as the last woman who could take it from her this week, Czech Karolína Plíšková, also failed to reach the quarter finals overnight, reports said.
