Jobs to go as furniture firms close

Two Adelaide furniture companies are to close with a loss of up to 70 jobs.

Steven’s Commercial Furniture at Salisbury South and Peacock Furniture at Port Adelaide will close early next month.

Union official Dave Kirner of the CFMEU said the companies had been unsuccessful in tenders for key projects such as the SA Health and Medical Research Institute.

“The major government project contracts in the big projects in the CBD are increasingly going to offshore manufacturers, so these companies tendered for that project, [but] didn’t get it,” he said.

Mr Kirner urged local manufacturers be given priority for such project tenders.

“It’s important that people keep in mind that if you want to have a manufacturing industry then when the big projects come up you do need to say ‘Well let’s support the local product and local labour,” he said.

The two companies could not be contacted for comment.
