Melbourne International Festival of Hindustani Classical Music

165

Melbourne has rapidly become an unlikely but unquestionable hub of Hindustani classical music over the past decade, and a favored destination for Hindustani classical musicians from around the world.

This is thanks to the efforts of a group of Melbournians who love the art form, and have been enthusiastically sharing it with the wider Melbourne community over the past 3 years through the Melbourne Hindustani Classical Music Society Inc. (MHCMS), having hosted over 40 recitals in that time at iconic Melbourne performance venues as well as baithak-style events in patron’s homes. The recitals are known to be of very high quality and always well attended.

MHCMS is now stepping up to organise Melbourne’s first ever International Festival of Hindustani Classical Music, with the inaugural edition to be held from 6th- 8th March 2020. Headlined by the iconic vocalist Vd Ashwini Bhide-Deshpande, the festival will feature Pt Sugato Nag (Sitar), Pt Rajendra Prasanna (Flute & Shehnai), Pt Abhijit Banerjee (Tabla), Pt Keshav Talegaonker (Vocal), Dr. Vasanti Tembe (Vocal), Sangeet Mishra (Sarangi) and Bobby Singh (Tabla), along with talented Melbourne-based Hindustani classical musicians.

Festivals are an important feature of Hindustani classical music – for audiences to hear the best musicians performing live, as well as for musicians to collaborate and innovate within this music form that is itself thousands of years old. It is a matter of distinct pride and indeed privilege for a city to hold an annual festival of Hindustani classical music. Just over 30 cities do so even within India, and only a handful outside of India, notably the Durbar festival of London and Tihai in San Francisco.

MHCMS has organised vocal, Sitar and Tabla workshops with these eminent musicians, and also a lecture/demonstration on the very basics of Hindustani Classical Music.
