Ahmedabad: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi displayed ample new-found love for Muslims at his ‘Sadbhavana’ fast here. This has certainly upset the Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS), which would like to continue seeing him as the poster-boy of Hindutva.
The chants of Allah-O-Akbar at the venue of the fast were a subject of animated discussion, with some SMSes being circulated about ‘Miyan Modi’. While associates like Vishwa Hindu Parishad have stayed away from the three-day show, the core leadership of RSS is not convinced that the Gujarat CM Narendra Modi’s moves don’t amount to appeasement.
RSS is not pleased with this new ‘avatar’ of Modi, even though he is anxious for wider acceptability. The matter was discussed at an informal meeting of senior RSS leaders held at the Hedgewar Bhavan, which was attended by three top RSS leaders Suresh Soni, V Satish and Ram Lal.
These three leaders also met Modi on the first day of his fast but were taken aback by VHP’s conspicuous absence at the venue, boycott and the presence of a large Muslim contingent. A senior RSS worker said, while the Sangh would prefer Modi over Arun Jaitley or Sushma Swaraj, they weren’t sure about his brazen tactics to woo the minorities.
A top VHP leader told, “We were surprised that hundreds of Muslims were being readily welcomed at Modi’s show, while the widow of Haren Pandya, a member of our parivar, was told to stay away.”
