The Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages Victoria (BDM) is involved in some of the most significant moments in the lives of Victorians. They work hard to provide a helpful and empathetic service and take pride in the records they keep for all of us, the Victorian community.
BDM is responsible for recording all births, adoptions, marriages and deaths in Victoria, registering all domestic and caring relationships in Victoria, registering name changes for those born or living in Victoria, issuing certificates for all the above and offer a civil marriage service.
They also offer some of their records to people looking to trace their family history, as well as provide data services to government agencies, universities and medical institutions for research and planning purposes.
BDM charge a different fee for its services, ranging from birth certificates to marriage certificates and name changes. These fees are updated every financial year. Currently a legal marriage certificate will cost you $33.80 plus $10 for express post within Australia. You may pay by EFTPOS, credit card, bank cheque, money order, personal cheques, but they do not accept cash or international bank cheques.
All of their services are all available online. The fastest way to apply for a certificate or registration is online. If you order a certificate, they will post it to you. When the centre is open, and you need a certificate urgently, you can apply and collect it on the spot from their Customer Service Centre. The details of the event must already be registered with BDM. Make sure you take all your identity documents and any supporting evidence. These centres can be very busy and may be long wait, between 11am and 3pm.
