Strike for separate Telangana continues

Hyderabad: Telangana supporters continued their protests as part of the general strike in the region that began on September 13 in support of the separate Indian statehood demand.

Hawkers did not deliver newspapers in Hyderabad in support of the ‘sakala janula samme’ (strike by all sections of people).

Telangana political Joint Action Committee (JAC) convener M Kodandaram was taken into custody by police while participating in a demonstration here and later released.

Telangana supporters held a demonstration outside the house of state Labour Minister D Nagender here for not quitting his post in support of the statehood demand and in protest against the cut in electricity to farmers due to the strike.

Elsewhere in the region, the activists of TRS and various other Telangana outfits held rallies, sit-ins and other forms of protest.

Telugu Desam MLA from Kamareddy in Nizamabad district Gampa Govardhan quit the party and joined TRS in protest against the alleged ‘ambivalent’ stand of the main opposition party on the separate statehood issue.

In Nizamabad district, TDP MLAs from Telangana region, who had quit their posts, were stopped on their way to Banswada by TRS workers. A bypoll is scheduled to be held in Banswada assembly constituency next month.
