Sao Paolo: Miss Angola Leila Lopes has won the Miss Universe 2011 crown. She was crowned the most beautiful woman in the universe in a star-studded ceremony in Brazil’s Sao Paolo.
Lopes was a strong contender and raised hopes for her country after making it to the final five contestants. She beat 88 other competitors at the Sao Paulo pageant.
China’s Luo Zilin came in as the fourth runner up, Philippines’ Shamcey Supsup was named third runner up, Brazil’s Priscila Machado became the second runner up and Ukraine’s Olesia Stefanko was picked first runner up.
Indian contestant Vasuki Sunkavalli, a 26-year-old from Hyderabad, failed to make it to top 10. Vasuki is a lawyer by profession. She was crowned ‘I Am She – Miss Universe India’ on July 15, 2011 in Mumbai. Vasuki is also a state level basketball player and a trained dancer.
Miss Australia Scherri-Lee Biggs made to the top 10 in the 60th anniversary of the world’s biggest beauty pageant.
Others in the top 10 were Costa Rica, France, Ukraine, Portugal, Panama, Philippines, Angola, China and Brazil.
Miss Universe 2010 – Ximena Navarrete of Mexico passed her crown on to this year’s Miss Universe.
A total of 89 contestants participated in this year’s pageant surpassing the previous record of 86 participants in 2006.
