Peter Slipper has stepped down as the Speaker of the House of Representatives following allegations that he misused cabcharge dockets and sexually harassed a former staffer.
Mr. Slipper said he would step aside as the Speaker of the House of Representatives until criminal behaviour allegations against him were resolved.
Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard has backed Mr. Slipper’s decision to stand aside from his role as Speaker.
Ms Gillard said it was “appropriate that Mr. Slipper has stood aside as Speaker whilst alleged criminal conduct is investigated”.
“It is also appropriate for all parties to note the processes under way and treat them with respect,” she said, in a statement.
