Rudd blames jetlag for radio gaffe

Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd, in a radio gaffe, said he was happy being the Prime Minister. He quickly corrected himself and blamed the jetlag for the mistake.

“I’m a very happy little vegemite being Prime Minister … being Foreign Minister of Australia,” he told an Australian channel. “You’ve caught me getting off the plane, jetlag.”

There have been rumours that Mr Rudd is planning a leadership bid amid dire opinion polling of Julia Gillard’s performance.

Mr Rudd said he fully supported the Prime Minister but did not use Ms Gillard’s name.

The gaffe comes as Tony Abbott and the Coalition overtook Labor in Victoria, Julia Gillard’s home state, to claim a clean-sweep lead in opinion polling in all mainland states.

But Victoria remains the only state where Ms Gillard is still ranked as preferred Prime Minister over Mr Abbott.
